While tractors are incredibly helpful pieces of equipment, it’s extremely important to remember that they’re also very dangerous. Even smaller tractors have the ability to seriously injure a person, whether they’re behind the wheel or simply standing nearby. For tips on how to stay safe during your very first tractor ride, be sure to read our helpful beginner’s tips below.

Dress Appropriately

In order to safely drive a tractor, you’ll first need to dress for the part. Before you hop into the cab, make sure you’re wearing a long pair of pants, as well as durable close-toed shoes, to ensure you’re protected from any flying objects that may be kicked up by your tractor. You’ll also want to avoid wearing any oversized clothing or skirts, as it’s easy for loose fabric to be caught in your tractor’s moving parts. This also means you’ll want to tie up your hair if it’s longer and remove any dangling jewelry before you start up your tractor’s engine.

Complete an Inspection

Tractor malfunctions can be a serious risk to your safety. To decrease the likelihood of an accident, we strongly encourage you to inspect your machine before you ride. To do this you’ll first want to take a quick walk around your tractor to examine the wheels or tracks, as well as look for any signs of leaking fluids. If everything checks out, move on to any attachments or implements you currently have installed on your equipment. Check that these tools are still safely attached to your tractor and that there aren’t any loose connections or extreme signs of wear that could cause these parts to detach. Afterward, you’ll want to hop into the cab and ensure that important safety features, such as headlights, taillights, seatbelts, and mirrors, are all working properly before you drive off.
