Excavators are powerful yet versatile machines used on construction sites around the world. While excavators can help make work easier, it’s important that owners and operators observe basic safety procedures. Otherwise, the excavator might do more harm than good. That’s why the experts at Burks Tractor Co Inc. have created this excavator safety guide.

Before Operation

At the start of each work day, inspect your excavator to make sure that basic systems like the controls are still functioning properly. Simply checking that your mirrors are clean and well-adjusted can help decrease your risk of having an accident. You should also make sure that the operator is aware of any underground lines or structures they will need to avoid while digging. If you’re not sure where these things are, call the local utility company to mark the job site. Finally, make sure that the operator wears their seatbelt at all times while using the excavator.

During Operation

There are several important safety procedures that the excavator operator needs to know and follow. For example, under no circumstances should anyone be allowed to ride in the excavator’s bucket or cab. The operator should stick to flat ground where possible, decreasing the vehicle’s speed when encountering rough terrain or high traffic. The excavator’s bucket should be kept low when transporting materials or descending slopes. Finally, never dig underneath the excavator.

After Operation

Always park the excavator on level ground with the bucket lowered. We recommend turning off the auto-idle switch and running the engine at half throttle for a few minutes so the turbocharger can cool down. Be sure to set the RPM to low idle and shut off the engine using the key switch. Remember to lock up the cab when you leave the excavator.
